Two weeks later, the US Air Force, on a bombing raid, got lost in the darkness and dropped its payload on the wrong target. The target they ended up hitting was the bunker, which itself was not damaged. But the building on top was demolished, sealing the bunker off completely.

The new commandant reported the bombing attack to Berlin and he was assured troops would be sent to recover the gas canisters.

But nobody ever arrived.

CHAPTER ONE

Berlin, December 2017

The motorised diggers ploughed into the earth, churning it up as if it was dust. The housing development was way behind schedule and the developers were told to hurry it up or lose the contract. So the diggers chewed into the densely packed earth, broke it up and threw it to one side.

Then they hit concrete.

The operator of the lead digger swore under his breath and tried again to break up the earth with his machine. But over and over he kept hearing the clanging sound of concrete and he suddenly realised he had a whole new set of problems on his hands.

They were already way behind. What were they going to do if they suddenly had concrete to break up and remove?

The guy got out of the digger and moved towards the spot where he had heard the concrete. When he got there, he stamped his foot down on the ground and realised that it was indeed what he feared it was.

“Shit.”

“What’s wrong?” called his colleague.

“Damn concrete, that’s what’s wrong” shouted the first one, “as if we didn’t have enough problems on our plate to begin with.”
